The Hummer – symbol of a pre-2008 recession, a gas-guzzling surplus – was revived as an “electric super truck” with a range of 350 miles, three electric motors, adjustable air suspension with 1,000 hp and a diagonal driving function called “Crab Mode”. “The electric truck is expected to go into production in late 2021, possibly before Tesla's Cybertruck.
The Hummer EV is arguably the most important vehicle to be announced as part of General Motors' billion dollar spin on electrification. It was revealed during a virtual event that aired during the World Series "The Voice" and on a deluge of social media and streaming platforms. The electric vehicle will be the first to feature General Motors' new modular platform and battery for electric vehicles known as the Ultium.
the first vehicle with GM's Ultium battery
The resurrected Hummer will be manufactured and sold under the GMC brand at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck facility – recently renamed Factory Zero – which the automaker is pumping $ 2.2 billion into to mass-produce electric vehicles.
The Hummer EV will initially be offered in four variants, none of which are cheap. The Hummer EV Edition 1 will go on sale in the fall of 2021 at a suggested retail price of $ 112,595. This version will include Crab Mode and Extraction Mode, which allow the truck's suspension height to be increased by approximately 149 mm to handle "extreme off-road situations like clearing boulders or calling for water," says GMC.
Next up is the Hummer EV3X, which will be available in fall 2022, with a three-engine setup, acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in three seconds, and a suggested price of $ 99,995. This is followed by the Hummer EV2X, which will be available in the spring of 2023 with Crab Mode, Extract Mode and a suggested price of $ 89,995. The latter is the Hummer EV2, available in Spring 2024, with just two engines and a suggested price of $ 79,995. A range of over 350 miles with a fully charged battery is expected for all four trim levels.
GM retired the Hummer in 2010. By that time, the boxy giant had become a symbol of pre-financial crisis surplus, made famous for its inclusion in rap videos and television shows such as The Sopranos and Entourage. But when the global recession hit and fuel prices rose, Hummer sales fell and the vehicle was discontinued.
“The name Hummer can polarize people. There is no question about that. "
Bringing it back as an electric vehicle is a risky move. Many people still remember the lobster as an insatiable gas eater and oversized street pig. And those impressions remain, Phil Brook, vice president of GMC marketing, told The Verge, citing the automaker's market research.
"The Hummer name can polarize people," said Brook. "This is not a question."
However, that impression disappeared when focus groups learned that the Hummer would be all-electric. Regarding the vehicle's excessive size – especially the wider than average road holding – Brook said the vehicle's 18-camera ultravision system, as well as the front and rear pedestrian warnings, will help drivers see all of their surroundings. "We are very comfortable with the place where we ended up," he added.
The Hummer EV won't be your average pickup truck. It will be a sideways-sinking off-roader with high torque, adjustable height, partially autonomous driver assistance and a variety of social media-friendly brand features.
Take the crab mode, for example. The rear wheel steering function allows all four wheels to turn in the same direction and move the vehicle sideways. GMC teased this feature over the summer, tweeting a lobster badge with a crab graphic.
Don't expect to be able to drive sideways at highway speeds, however. According to GMC, the function, which is designed for “even better maneuverability in difficult terrain”, is only available at “low speeds”. No doubt the automaker is trying to steal some thunder from EV startup Rivian. His RT1 truck is able to perform a “tank turn”, which enables the truck to turn in circles in the dirt. Does it allow more flexibility with parallel parking? Only a real test can say that for sure.
an adaptive air suspension system called Extract Mode
Then there is the adaptive air suspension system called Extract Mode, which allows the vehicle to be raised or lowered six inches. But don't confuse this with a lowrider's hydraulic system. This feature is designed for off-roading when a driver needs to remove particularly large objects such as boulders. (A variety of vehicles offer adjustable suspension, including Tesla Model S and X vehicles. Tesla is also working on updated dynamic suspension for Cybertruck's electric pickup truck.)
GMC added a steel coating to the underbody of the lobster to better protect the battery that lies in the bottom of the vehicle. The vehicle's 18-camera Ultravision system (another Hummer-specific brand name) includes front and rear underbody cameras to better protect against damage. The cameras are also equipped with a wash function to remove dirt and debris.
Speaking of the battery, the Hummer EV will come with a double-stacked, 24-module Ultium propulsion system that offers three engines a range and power of at least 350 miles. With three engines and two drive units, the truck is expected to reach up to 1,000 horsepower and an estimated 11,500 pound-feet of torque – an astounding number that's also a bit misleading thanks to creative math (see this piece on the roadshow for more information in full Explanation).
GMC did not close the trailer load or the volume of the rear cargo space prior to the official announcement on October 20.

GMC claims the Hummer EV can be charged at speeds up to 100 miles in 10 minutes – the equivalent of a full charge in under 40 minutes. This charging time is possible with an 800 volt charger with a peak charging rate of over 300 kW.
The “Infinity Roof” has four fold-out “Sky Panels” that can be removed and stored in the “Frunk” (or front trunk) to enable a “unique open-air experience”. The four roof panels and the front T-bar can be removed manually by one person, and there is no connection above the front and rear windows.
In the vehicle, there is a 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen in the center console, while a 12.3-inch diagonal driver information center acts as a digital instrument cluster with all the relevant information on the status and performance of the vehicle. Information is displayed via smartphone-style “widgets”, particularly in relation to off-road details such as the terrain status.
GMC has partnered with Fortnite developer Epic Games to leverage the game maker's Unreal Engine game development platform for Hummer's in-car software, an industry first. Because Unreal Engine is designed to allow photorealistic computer-generated graphics, the software can display full, high-resolution representations of the vehicle and its various internal and lower parts, as well as mechanical and software mechanisms.
"The graphics are amazing," said Brook of GMC. "They are very difficult to describe, you really have to see them."
GM is reviving the Hummer in a time of rapid SUV and pickup sales in the US. Conveniently, automakers make more profits with larger vehicles than sedans: GM said in a recent call for profits that the average transaction price for its full-size pickups was up $ 1,526 compared to the first quarter of this year despite the pandemic and ensuing recession.
The truck and SUV boom also has a human cost in the form of a sharp increase in global carbon emissions for the sector, as well as a dramatic increase in pedestrian deaths. An electric lobster might help mitigate the former, but pedestrians are unlikely to become any safer.
"It will probably still be a big, beefy vehicle, but it won't necessarily have the negative notion of being particularly wasteful or really useless."
In fact, GMC's ability to revive the Hummer depends on the good behavior of its buyers. If it's used to terrorize flat-sharing communities like its gas-powered predecessor, it's unlikely to be happily welcomed, says Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds' executive director of Insights.
"It will probably still be a big, beefy vehicle, but it won't necessarily have the negative notion of being particularly wasteful or really useless," said Caldwell.
The Hummer pickup is scheduled to go into production at the end of 2021. Delivery begins shortly thereafter. That's when Tesla's Cybertruck is slated to hit the streets, and just a few months after the electric vehicle launches, Rivian will be shipping its own electric pickup and SUV. GMC is also planning to manufacture an electric Hummer SUV, although there is currently no timeframe for this vehicle.
It's been almost 30 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger saw a convoy of military Humvees drive down the street in Washington, DC and got the idea to buy one for himself. But the Terminator actor and former California governor won't be the spokesman for this resurrected lobster, even though Schwarzenegger is currently advocating electric transportation. The new speaker will be LeBron James, fresh from his last NBA championship.
"Whenever I have any kind of partnership, it's always pretty easy," James said of the endorsement deal, "anything that's organic and then something I have a lot of respect for."
Bio. Now there's a word that has never been used to describe a lobster. Until now.
