Although we have argued a lot about Netflix In the new action film "The Old Guard" we mostly agree: The film is both reasonably entertaining and surprisingly stupid.
We didn't deal with the basic concept that Charlize Theron led a small group of immortal mercenaries. But the plot feels arbitrary and lazy (yes, even by Hollywood standards), with lots of chunky dialogues on the nose – all the more disappointing when the script was adapted from the graphic novel by the well-known comic author Greg Rucka, he created with the artist Leandro Fernández.
So the debate was whether "The Old Guard" remained delightful despite its stupidity or whether the virtues of the film – Theron's Charisma and her commitment to the kinetic action scenes – only made him passably entertaining.
