NEW YORK (Reuters) – Many Americans have seen economic checks on their bank accounts in the past few days, but some, including many illegally resident migrants, have been barred from receiving aid.
In New York, immigrant advocacy groups like the New York Immigrant Coalition (NYIC) and Make the Road are pushing for the state to pass a $ 3.5 billion fund to help them.
"Street vendors are people who provide services every day … but who are still not eligible for incentives," said Theresa Thanjan, member engagement manager at NYIC.
"These people are totally excluded … so we're trying to find a way to support them," said Thanjan.
Reyna, who refused to give her last name, said she wasn't given an incentive and wasn't sure how she would handle it.
"I have a job every eight days and work and make $ 80. And I can't live on $ 80," she said. "I'm scared right now. I owe two months rent."
She said she lived and worked as a house cleaner in the New York area for more than two decades after crossing the border from Mexico.
At a rally Thursday to promote housekeeping rights, Reyna, who lives with her two young children, said she was able to find steady cleaning appearances five days a week before last year's lockdown. But the jobs have since shrunk to one.
As an activist at Make the Road, Reyna shared how some of her cleaning colleagues braved the pandemic to contract the coronavirus while at work.
"It all makes me nervous looking for money," she said. "What should I do?"
