(Reuters) – The U.S. Attorney's Office is seeking a 27-month prison sentence for the former head of Uber (N :)’s self-driving technology unit, Anthony Levandowski, who pleaded guilty to known sensitive documents from his former employer, Google, in March he came to Uber.
The state attorney is also seeking three years of supervised release and an agreed reimbursement of nearly $ 756,500 to Alphabet Inc (O :)’s self-driving car company Waymo, according to court files filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Levandowski's lawyers have asked for 12 months in prison for him to do community service and a $ 95,000 fine, court records added.
"Unfortunately, it is no exaggeration to say that prison terms today can result in a severe health crisis or even death sentence because the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is currently unable to control the spread of the coronavirus." Levandowskis Lawyers wrote.
The case arose from the allegations made by Google and its sister company Waymo in 2017 that Uber had started its own self-driving car development with business secrets and employees that Levandowski had illegally taken over from Google.
Uber issued corporate shares to Alphabet and revised its software to resolve the case. The Justice Department later announced a 33-point charge against Levandowski.
Levandowski filed for bankruptcy protection in March, shortly after a court confirmed he had to pay $ 179 million to Google to end a lawsuit over his separation from the Alphabet Inc entity.
