Princess Beatrice wore the same tiara as her grandmother Queen Elizabeth at her wedding this week, Buckingham Palace said, and released further details on the surprising private ceremony that was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 31-year-old Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi at Windsor Castle on Friday. She is the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York.
The couple had originally planned to get married in May, but the coronavirus lock forced them to reschedule an appointment and hold a reserved ceremony.
The 94-year-old monarch and her husband Prince Philip (99) were among the few participants. Wedding ceremonies have been allowed in England since July 4th, but with a limit of 30 guests.
"The couple decided to hold a small private ceremony with their parents and siblings after their wedding was postponed in May," the palace said in a statement.
British media said the "secret" wedding was the first time the queen had seen her second son Andrew, 60, since his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in the United States.
Maxwell is accused of having sexually abused young girls for late US financier Jeffrey Epstein, which she denies. The United States Attorney also wants to ask the British prince about his contacts with Epstein, but says he has so far evaded their requests, an allegation he rejects.
According to Buckingham Palace, Beatrice, who is ninth in the throne, wore a vintage ivory dress by Norman Hartnell and the Queen Mary tiara with diamond fringes, both of which the Queen lent her for the day.
Elizabeth wore the same tiara made from a diamond chain in 1919 that Queen Victoria was given for her wedding when she married Philip in 1947.
"The service conformed to government guidelines and allowed them to celebrate their wedding with their closest family," said the palace.
"No anthems were sung, but a selection of music was played. The national anthem was played but not sung."
