The United States confirmed 59,222 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours on Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported in its real-time record.
The total number of cases in the United States, the nation most affected by the global pandemic, exceeded 3.36 million, the Baltimore-based university said at 8:30 p.m. (Tuesday, 12:30 a.m. GMT).
Another 411 deaths were reported, increasing this total to 135,582.
The country has seen a revival of cases in the so-called sun belt that stretches across the south from Florida to California.
This increase has prompted some states to reverse the loosening of their anti-virus restrictions – or to reintroduce stricter measures.
On Monday, California's democratic governor Gavin Newsom ordered the closure of restaurants, bars, cinemas, hair salons, and churches to curb the spread.
