The House of Representatives spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that 11 statues of Confederate soldiers or officials would be removed by the U.S. Capitol. Recent efforts against racism after a black man died in police custody sparked mass protests.
"Monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a clearly racist end are a grotesque affront to these ideals of" American democracy and freedom, "wrote the top Democrat in Congress to a bipartisan committee.
"Their statues are a tribute to hate, not heritage," added Pelosi. "They have to be removed."
