Austrian police fined a man 500 euros for loud wind after officials stopped him earlier this month to verify his identity.
The police defended the massive fine and said that he intentionally uttered "massive flatulence" and lifted his butt off the bench where he was sitting.
The defendant complained of what he described as a disproportionate and unjustified fine when he reported the events of June 5 on the O24 news website.
In response to the following comments on social media, the police in the Austrian capital justified their response on Twitter.
"Of course, no one will be put on the spot if you accidentally slip," said the police.
In this case, the young man appeared generally "provocative and uncooperative".
Then "he rose slightly from the bench, looked at the officials, and obviously radiated massive flatulence in the immediate vicinity."
The police said the man could contest the fine in the legal system.
