Annie Murphy stole our hearts when Alexis Rose stepped into the frame with her incredibly dangling pearl earrings and plunged down her family's opulent stairs to plead that her extensive purse collection would not be repossessed. (Your friend bought them for them, technically they belong to him.)
During the entire run of Schitt & # 39; s CreekSome of Alexis' most memorable lines have to do with the many friends she has had over the years and all the most interesting adventures she has had from Somalia to South Africa. But after separating from Ted in season six – and staying briefly with Artie – Alexis leaves Schitt & # 39; s Creek single with no plans to pursue any future romance. Even a month after the final aired, I think this is the best decision the authors could make for them.
She is a good friend, a loving sister, and someone who deserves to feel confident regardless of whether she is in a relationship or not.
From the moment the Rose family arrives at the motel, Alexis is devastated by both her family's sudden bankruptcy and the fact that her billionaire friend Stavros is playing abroad without her. In case you need a refresher, he's the one who left her on a trip to Rio, gave her his ex-wife's engagement ring, and went to Diddy's white party without her. Unfortunately for Alexis, her other ex-friends don't seem to be much better. There was the drug lord from Thailand who caught her in his suitcase as a teenager, the Saudi prince who held her hostage in his palace, the Ugandan diamond smuggler who kidnapped her friend, the sultan's nephew who was not allowed to speak to her . and not one, but two substitute teachers.
Alexis also had a lot of relationships and encounters with many celebrities, including her claims that she had a casual date with Prince Harry, met Josh Groban and Adam Levine, sextured with Zac Efron, and had her first kiss with Jared Leto. Despite all of these exciting – and highly unlikely – stories, some of Alexis & # 39; s most remarkable relationships with the men she meets on the show are Mutt and Ted.
Mutt Schitt (yes, I promise that's his name) is Roland and Jocelyn's eldest son and is considered a brooding hiker who lives in a barn on the outskirts of the city. He and Alexis meet at the tailgating party shortly after the Roses' arrival in Schitt & # 39; s Creek. The two are later assigned to community service, which leads to a lot of sexual tension and a rainy night of fun in Mutt's barn.
But it doesn't take long for Mutt to shave his character-defining beard and look for pine cones for an indefinite period, which leads to the eagerly awaited end of their relationship. Aside from the fact that they had completely different interests and personalities, Mutt and Alexis had a flat relationship that was almost entirely based on attraction, which didn't make him any better for them than their other friends.
Then there's Ted Mullens, the city veterinarian, who easily charms Alexis with his sweet nature and winning smile. Although he was already interested in Alexis in season one, her decision to go out with Mutt caused her to be broken until season three when Alexis realized she had made a mistake.
Unlike her previous friends, Ted takes the time to listen to her, logs in to make sure she is doing well in any family drama, and encourages her to follow her passions and dreams. While Alexis has a lot to deal with, he never judges her as herself and gently leads her in a better direction using only his natural kindness when he can. He also makes lots of adorable cheesy animal jokes and helps Alexis when she realizes she has lice, so he's the best.
Even after their relationship has faltered, Ted tries to support Alexis by appearing until she graduates from high school. It's traits like these that make Ted the most adorable friend Alexis ever had, and she seems to agree, which is why her decision not to go to the Galapagos Islands in season six – which she made with helpful advice from Twyla – is so difficult weighs on her. Alexis is forced to choose to live with Ted indefinitely on an island she knows she will hate and go to New York City alone. She chooses the latter and breaks herself and our hearts.
In an interview with Weekly entertainmentShowrunner and star Dan Levy revealed that the split between Alexis and Ted was not always planned. "The Alexis Ted revelation was a four-season arc," said Levy. "I thought Alexis and Ted would be the wedding at the end of the series – and then I foolishly said to Annie (there would be a double wedding). I meant it then, but so much is changing."
When asked about her feelings about the separation of Ted and Alexis, Annie Murphy said that she was devastated. "I said: & # 39; Yay, I can't wait! Sign up. This will be a perfect end to the show, & # 39;" said Murphy, referring to the possibility of Ted and Alexis wedding. "(When it didn't happen) I was angry. I threatened to end the show – and didn't follow it."
As broken as I was when I saw Ted and Alexis spending their last moments together at their favorite booth at Cafe Tropical, I was also somewhat relieved and happy, not that they had split up, but that Alexis was finally getting some time could take to date. Alexis has had no time since the show's start to find out what she liked and what her real passions were because she was always trying to adjust the interests of her current boyfriend. With Ted, Alexis found the drive to pursue these passions and get to know himself as a person. After her relationship with him, she was allowed to be independent and pursue her passions without fear of someone else pulling her in a different direction, and her character needed it more than anything from the start.
Over the course of six seasons, Alexis has inspired me to be more adventurous, to adopt my personal style and to talk more about what I want. Although her character is externally materialistic, a little tearful and frippy, as Moira might say, Alexis is also incredibly kind, thoughtful, and accomplished on social media. She is a good friend, a loving sister and someone who deserves to feel confident regardless of whether she is in a relationship or not. Going to New York alone proves that she grew as a person – not because of her friends, but because of her own choices and the help of the people she loved – and there's something very Alexis about that.
