According to an AFP balance sheet by official sources on Thursday at 0955 GMT, more than 12 million coronavirus infections were registered worldwide, more than half in the United States and Latin America.
At least 12,063,425 cases and 549,451 deaths have been registered, with the number of infections doubling since May 31. About half of those infected with the virus have recovered.
With 3,055,101 cases and 132,309 deaths, the United States is the most affected country, with Brazil second only to 1,713,160 cases and 67,964 deaths.
The numbers are likely to reflect only a fraction of the number of infections, as many countries only test the most serious cases.
