(Reuters) – The World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing, China have been postponed again to March 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global governing body of the sport said on Thursday.
The event was originally scheduled for March 13-15 this year, but has been postponed for 12 months due to fears related to the spread of the novel coronavirus in China.
Organizers have now agreed to host the Nanjing event a year after the 2022 championship in Belgrade, World Athletics added.
"For the safety of our athletes and technical staff, we must adequately consider the risks that arise if a large group of people under the pandemic situation attend the event and fully respect and implement the pandemic prevention policy of the host country," World Athletics said in one Explanation.
"The indoor athletics season falls within a narrow calendar window (until the end of March), so it is not possible to extend the event to a later point in the year."
