The smart home gadget manufacturer Wyze has a new version of its flagship product: the Wyze Cam v3, as the company calls it. The redesigned security camera still costs just $ 20, in line with Wyze's aggressively low-cost smart home strategy. Pre-orders start today with a shipping date in mid-November.
In addition to the new design, the Wyze Cam v3 has some significant differences to its predecessor. Thanks to its IP65 weather resistance, the new camera can be used both as an indoor and an outdoor model. It also has twice the number of infrared LEDs to improve night vision and aid in home and outdoor use.
The new model has a new color night vision option thanks to a new sensor with a lower aperture that can capture 40 percent more light. According to Wyze, the option is enabled by default on Wyze Cam v3 unless users enable classic black and white night vision instead.
There are a few other subtle changes worth mentioning. For example, Wyze Cam v3 captures five more frames per second than the previous model, 20 during the day and 15 at night. It also has a 20 degree wider field of view for a maximum of 130 degrees and a built-in 80 decibel siren to use an automatic alarm that can be triggered when the camera detects a person in their field of view.
New in version three is the simultaneous bidirectional communication (without pressing a push-to-talk button) for speaking via the camera, for example if you want to mount it outside next to your front door or use it as a baby monitor.
