PARIS (Reuters) – Alexander Zverev says he has to be "flawless" if he is to beat Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the Paris Masters on Saturday.
The 20-time Spanish Grand Slam champion Nadal defeated his compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta on Friday 4: 6: 7: 5: 6: 1, before Zverev defeated the Swiss Stan Wawrinka 6: 3: 7: 6 (1) and sparked a blockbuster fight.
"If you play Rafa at any point in the tournament, you have to be flawless to be successful," Zverev told reporters after his win.
"Although I think in the later stages all the top players always play better and it is even more difficult to beat them. I'm looking forward to this game. It will be a very difficult challenge."
"I think Rafa is extremely motivated here. He has never won this tournament so I think that this is an additional motivation for him as well. For me too. This is the best result I've had in Paris so far, but I hope I can go further. "
While both players are aiming for their first title in the Paris Masters, the 23-year-old Zverev is 5-1 against Nadal in previous matches. His only win against the Spaniard at last year's ATP final in London.
"I mean, I think most tennis players on this planet have a deficit against Rafa," said Zverev with a smile. "I think that's quite normal."
